When Is the Best Time to Buy NY Scratch-Off Tickets?

The honest answer: day of the week and time of day do not matter. What matters is which game you buy and where in its life cycle the game is. Here is the data-driven version.

Does the day of week matter?

No. Scratch-off tickets are not drawn on a schedule like Mega Millions or Powerball. The winning tickets exist in the print run from day one. Buying on Wednesday vs Saturday changes nothing about your odds.

Does the time of year matter?

Slightly. The NY Lottery launches most premium ($20-$30) games in Q1 and Q4. If you prefer playing fresh games (with all top prizes still in circulation), shopping in January-February or October-November gives you the most launches to choose from. See our live new releases page.

What actually matters: game life cycle

This is the only timing variable that moves the needle. NY scratch-off games go through 4 phases:

  • Launch (days 0-30): All top prizes available. Remaining odds = published overall odds. Best buying window.
  • Mature (days 30-180): Some top prizes claimed; ticket inventory still 60-90% intact. Remaining odds start drifting worse than overall odds.
  • Late (days 180-365): Most top prizes claimed but inventory remains. Avoid these games — you are buying tickets after the jackpots are gone.
  • Closed: NY Lottery announces game-end date; one year remaining to claim prizes.
