Expected Value (EV)

Average dollar return per ticket if the game were played an unlimited number of times.

Full Definition

Expected Value is the sum of every prize amount multiplied by its probability of occurring, minus the ticket price. EV is always negative for scratch-off lotteries in the long run; "best EV" means the least negative. ScratchOffsNY computes a live remaining-EV for every NY game by recomputing prize probabilities from current unsold-ticket estimates.
